Baroque
The Baroque is the epitome of the "courtly", with France, with its kings plays the leading role culturally. But also in England, Italy, Holland and Germany to form one or several typical forms of Baroque style, which all have the same goal: powerful, voluptuous forms and the creation of beautiful, richly decorated representation of objects. Cabinets now show very strong, projecting cornices, which are often free-standing or supported by twisted columns. Carvings are less stressed. They are replaced by new sophisticated marquetry in precious materials. Pronounced like the typical furniture decorated with bead and cove Frankfurter Welle cabinet or the style-defining in northern Germany pompous Schappschränke develop.
At the beginning of the 18th Century curving, sculptural forms were first used on large cabinet furniture such as wardrobes or chests of drawers monastery and palace institutions. The representative character of the Baroque furniture was especially prevalent in France and Germany, the cabinet maker did not design more individual pieces, but entire sets were therefore responsible for the overall design of homes or castles. For the first time in the recent history of the interior of the move towards a single style was determined. The tropical hardwoods available by the increasing world trade allowed special veneer and inlay work.
